Hundreds of faithful in recent years are attracted to the maritime transfer of the icon of St. Emilianos of Kalimasia.
With the participation of dozens of ships and traditional boats, the icon of the Saint starts from the picturesque harbor of Agios Ioannis and ends at the mole of St. Emilianos, where the homonymous Church is celebrated a few meters away.
Dozens of boat owners also participated in the custom of transport this year, while hundreds of faithful, along with Metropolitan Markos and a guard of honor and authorities on the island, were expecting the image of the Saint on land.
Saint Emilianos was Bishop of Kizikos after Nicholas, in the years 787-815 AD.
He fought with all the power that God had given him for the veneration of the holy icons, when the emperor was the iconoclast Leo V.
As he practiced Orthodoxy, he spoke passionately about it and empowered believers to endure wicked persecutions.
He suffered many maladies and sorrows and eventually died in exile.
