This morning, August 14, Metropolitan Klimis of Peristeri reposed in the Lord due to health problems he was facing.
The Metropolitan had been hospitalized in Thriasio Hospital following a pulmonary embolism he suffered yesterday.
The Metropolitan’s health condition has deteriorated in recent months, and for this reason, he had been hospitalized several times.
The Church of Greece expressed sorrow over the passing of Metropolitan Klimis of Peristeri.
As mentioned in the announcement, the funeral service for the Metropolitan of Peristeri will take place on Monday, August 16, 2021, at 11.00 am at the Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Peristeri, which will be officiated by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece.
Metropolitan Athinagoras of Ilion, Acharnes and Petroupolis has been appointed as locum tenens of the Metropolis of Peristeri.
Life of Metropolitan Klimis of Peristeri
The Metropolitan (baptized Dimitrios Kotsomytis) was born in Aipeia, Kalamata, in 1954. He studied at the School of Theology and at the Department of Neohellenic and Byzantine Philology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
On August 15, 1982, he became a monk in the Monastery Sagmata. He was ordained a deacon on August 23, 1982, and a presbyter on May 1, 1985, by the then Metropolitan of Thebes and Levadia, Ieronymos. On the same day, he received the rank of Archimandrite.
He served as preacher at the Metropolis of Thebes and Levadia (1982-1999).
In 1999 he was transferred to the Archdiocese of Athens and appointed as Head of the Church of Prophet Elias in Pagrati.
On October 10, 2014, he was appointed Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece and then he was elected Bishop of Methoni following a proposal by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens.
On October 13, 2014, he was ordained a Bishop in the Church of the Prophet Elias in Pagrati. On March 20, 2019, he was elected Metropolitan of Peristeri by the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece.
