On Sunday, 16 July 2023, with the blessing of Archbishop Makarios of Australia, Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Archdiocesan Church of Saint Eustathios, on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and conducted a memorial service, in the presence of Ms. Doxa Komodromou, official representative of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as Mr. Antonios Sammoutis, High Commissioner of Cyprus to Australia, Mr. Emmanuel Kakavelakis, Consul General of Greece in Melbourne, Mr. Tony Kyriakou, President of the Justice For Cyprus Co-ordinating Committee in Melbourne and Victoria, the presidents and members of various other local Greek associations and organisations and many faithful believers.
Afterwards, at the Australian Hellenic Memorial, wreaths were laid, and brief speeches were delivered by the officials, who declared the unjust and sorrowful invasion and continued occupation of the northern part of Cyprus for almost five decades.
On Monday morning, Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis, on behalf of Archbishop Makarios of Australia, received Ms. Komodromou and Mr. Sammoutis, with whom he had a constructive discussion on matters of common interest.
