On the fifth Sunday of Lent, April 21, Archbishop Makarios of Australia paid a visit to the Parish – Community of Saint Savvas the New of Kalymnos in the Sydney suburb of Banksia. He presided over the celebration of the feast of Saint Mary of Egypt and the Translation of the holy relics of the Parish’s Protector. Among the faithful present was Bayside Municipal Councillor Paul Sedrak, representing Mayor Bill Saravinovski.
Following the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Makarios addressed the congregation, reflecting on the virtues exemplified by the honored Saints. He highlighted the spiritual lineage of Saint Savvas the New, tracing his connection to another revered figure, Saint Nektarios, Bishop of Pentapolis. Regarding Saint Mary of Egypt, the Archbishop emphasized her sacred zeal, profound spiritual struggle, and unwavering devotion to God. Encouraging the faithful to emulate her commitment, he stressed the significance of steadfast faith in the revealed truth of God.
Expressing gratitude for the invitation, Archbishop Makarios commended Fr. Savvas Pizanias, the Hierarchical Head, for his dedicated ministry within the Parish – Community of Saint Savvas the New. He extended well wishes for the forthcoming Holy and Great Week and Holy Easter.
In response, Fr. Savvas conveyed the parishioners’ affection and appreciation for Archbishop Makarios’s paternal guidance. He described the Archbishop’s work in the Orthodox Church of Australia as transformative and salvific, emphasizing his unifying spirit, patience, perseverance, and profound love for the flock. Fr. Savvas expressed gratitude for the gift of Archbishop Makarios’s leadership, which brings strength and joy to the community.
