Kamala Harris has secured the support of at least 1,967 delegates ahead of the Democratic convention in August in Chicago, positioning her as the party’s candidate for the November 5 presidential election, following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, CNN reported, citing a state-by-state count.
Sources from Mrs. Harris’s campaign confirmed similar numbers to Reuters. The Associated Press reported that the Vice President has secured the backing of 2,214 delegates out of a total of approximately 3,900, surpassing the required simple majority.
However, these developments remain unofficial as they are based on journalistic information. Pro-Biden delegates are now “free” to choose their candidate following the president’s decision to exit the re-election campaign on Sunday.
