The European Commission has proposed a financial support package of over €1 billion from the EU Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to help Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Greece, and France recover from the severe floods that struck these countries in 2023. This aid package is part of the EU’s ongoing commitment to assist Member States in addressing the aftermath of natural disasters.
Specifically, Greece is set to receive €101.5 million to address the damage caused by the devastating floods in September 2023. The proposed financial assistance aims to support the country’s recovery efforts, including the repair of damaged infrastructure, the protection of cultural heritage, and clean-up operations.
The distribution of the aid package is as follows:
Italy: €378.8 million for flood damage in the Emilia-Romagna region in May 2023, with an additional €67.8 million for the Tuscany region following floods in October and November 2023.
Slovenia: €428.4 million to support recovery efforts after floods in 2023.
Austria: €5.2 million to mitigate the impact of floods in August 2023.
Greece: €101.5 million for recovery from the September 2023 floods.
France: €46.7 million for damage caused by floods in the Hauts-de-France region in November 2023.
This funding proposal follows requests for Solidarity Fund assistance from the affected countries. Once approved by the European Parliament and the Council, the financial aid will be disbursed promptly and in a single installment to each applicant country.
