The European Union has issued a stern condemnation of the recent transfer of Iranian-made ballistic missiles to Russia, according to a statement by EU High Representative Josep Borrell.
The statement highlights that the missile transfer poses a direct threat to European security and marks a significant escalation beyond the supply of Iranian UAVs and ammunition, which Russia has already employed in its illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.
The EU pledged to respond swiftly, coordinating with international partners to implement new and substantial restrictive measures against Iran. These measures are expected to target individuals and entities involved in Iran’s ballistic missile and drone programs. The EU is also considering further restrictions on Iran’s aviation sector.
The condemnation comes amid Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine, which include the use of ballistic missiles and drones. Borrell emphasized that these attacks reflect Russia’s determination to continue its violent campaign, particularly targeting Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure, with the intent to cause mass civilian casualties and widespread destruction.
Borrell reiterated the EU’s long-standing position on Iran’s involvement, stating, “The European Union has repeatedly strongly warned Iran against transferring ballistic missiles to Russia.”
