The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, emphasized that Cyprus is not a forgotten corner of the EU. She pointed out that “the challenges of Cyprus are our challenges and that Europe will never be whole as long as Cyprus remains divided.” Metsola stated, “In our Europe, divisions have no place. That is why it is important to stress that this forced division of an EU member state is not a Cypriot issue, but a European one, and we must respond to it in a European way.”
She highlighted that “Europe has the power to heal – we have seen it, we have felt it, we have lived it. It is our responsibility to use this experience to bring people together, to work towards a sovereign, European state, a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions, the Council conclusions, and the values of the EU.”
Additionally, the EP President noted, “The EU has been forged by the painful history of our continent. Where there was once war, pain, and bloodshed, meetings are now being held in a spirit of cooperation.” Metsola’s remarks underline the European Parliament’s commitment to addressing the Cyprus issue as a shared responsibility and working towards a unified and peaceful Europe.
