The online event for the International Greek Language Day in Turkey was canceled due to the strong reactions in the country.
As reported by skai.gr, a special reference to Greek poet Gerogios Seferis would be made in the event organized by the Universities of Ankara, of Constantinople and of Thrace with the support of the Greek Embassy in Ankara.
The University of Ankara announced that the event would be canceled that was scheduled for midday.
There were reactions on Twitter and in various Turkish media such as Yeni Akit and Dirilis Postasi, which rejected the event for the Greek language under the pretext that there is “oppression of the Turks of Western Thrace” by Greece, also ignoring the fact that the minority in Thrace is defined by the Treaties as “Muslim” and not “Turkish.”
The University of Ankara announced in a statement that “the event for the International Greek Language Day, which was planned as part of a scientific activity, was canceled because of a false impression on its purpose.”
