In response to recent events surrounding the ordination of Deaconess Angeliki by Metropolitan Seraphim of Zimbabwe, the Metropolis of Zimbabwe has released its perspective on the matter in a separate announcement.
According to the announcement, the Patriarch of Alexandria was duly informed in 2022 of Metropolitan Seraphim’s intention to proceed with the ordination, having sought and received permission in April 2023. Following the Patriarchal blessing and canonical permission, Metropolitan Seraphim followed the pastoral process of Saint Nektarios of Pentapolis, a revered figure in the Orthodox tradition.
The statement emphasizes the historical context of the revival of the ordination of Deaconesses in the Orthodox Church, citing the efforts of Inter-Orthodox Theological Conferences and organized Orthodox Centers over the past forty years. It highlights the Church of Alexandria’s historical role in leading discussions on theological matters, drawing parallels with past instances such as the establishment of the new Calendar.
Furthermore, the revival of the ordination of Deaconesses is framed within the context of the importance of the Virgin Mary in Christian salvation. Quoting Saint Nektarios’ Ecclesiastical Hymn “O virgin pure, Immaculate lady Theotokos,” the statement underscores the significance of the Theotokos and her obedient response to the will of God: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
The Metropolis clarifies that while the revival of the ordination of Deaconesses in the Patriarchate of Alexandria sets a precedent, it does not bind other Local Churches to follow suit. Each Local Church retains autonomy on such matters, subject to the decisions of its Holy Synod.
Finally, Metropolitan Seraphim of Zimbabwe expresses regret for any confusion caused despite the reliance on the Typikon in the ordination process. The Metropolis assures the faithful that the ministry of Deaconess Angeliki-Phoebe will be addressed in forthcoming instructions from the Holy Patriarchal Synod.
Through this announcement, the Metropolis of Zimbabwe seeks to provide clarity and transparency regarding the recent ordination within the context of Orthodox tradition and Church governance.
