On Sunday March 31, during the Third Sunday of Great Lent, Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa officiated a Patriarchal Divine Liturgy at the historic Church of Agios Savvas in the old town of Nicosia.
Patriarch Theodore was accompanied by Metropolitan Seraphim of Zimbabwe, Metropolitan Georgios of Guinea and Exarch of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Athens, Metropolitan Nicodemus of Memphis and Patriarchal Commissioner in Cairo, Bishop Nicodemus of Nitra and new Exarch of the Alexandrian Church in Cyprus, Abbot of the Monastery of Apostle Barnabas and Protosyncellus of the Archdiocese of Cyprus Archim. Ioannis, representative of the Archbishop of Cyprus.
Then, the enthronement ceremony of the new Patriarchal Exarch of the Alexandrian Church in Cyprus, Bishop Nicodemus of Nitria, took place.
At the end of the ceremony, Patriarch Theodore II referred to the history of the Exarchate of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Cyprus and its importance for the Alexandrian Throne. He also said that the Church of Alexandria and of Cyprus are linked by ties of fraternal love and interdependence.
Then Abbot f. Ioannis conveyed the wishes of Archbishop Chrysostomos and offered on his behalf the Archbishop’s Engolpion and Cross to the newly ordained Exarch. This symbolic gesture shows that the Exarch of the Patriarchate of Alexandria is the link of the Church of Alexandria to the Church of Cyprus.
