Metropolitan Paul of Drama falls asleep in the Lord

Metropolitan Paul (Pavlos) of Drama reposed in the Lord this morning, May 2, 2022. According to informations, the late hierarch of the town of Drama fell asleep in the Lord due to myocardial infarction in a hospital in Thessaloniki where he was transferred at the early hours of Monday.

The Metropolitan was in Naoussa during the weekend, invited by the Metropolitan Panteleimon of Naoussa, in order to attend the festivities for the 200th anniversary of the Holocaust of Naousa and for the celebration of Life-giving Spring.

Present were also the President of the Republic of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens.

On Sunday evening, the late Metropolitan of Drama visited Veria where he felt unnwell and was initially taken to the city hospital, and then transferred to Thessaloniki.

The blessed Metropolitan of Drama was born in Veria, Greece in 1963.

After his circular studies he studied at the Ecclesiastical School of Lamia where he graduated.

He was then admitted to the Theological School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Upon completion of his undergraduate studies in 1988, he continued his postgraduate studies receiving a postgraduate diploma in 1995.

He has been a doctor of the same university since 2002.

He was ordained a deacon in 1983 and an presbyter in 1988 by the blessed Metropolitan of Veria, Pavlos.

He was priest of the Holy Church of Saint Anthony, patron saint of Veria, and then in 1991, he was elected abbot of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Soumela and vice-president of the board of directors of the foundation which bears the same name.

He has written many articles in newspapers and magazines. He has given many speeches and lectures. He has taken part in church missions in Greece and abroad.

Five days after the death of the Metropolitan of Drama, Dionysios, on October 5, 2005, he was elected Metropolitan of Drama by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece.

He was ordained a Bishop on the 9th of the same month.

He inaugurated the new church of Agios Chrysostomos of Smyrna in Drama in 2016.
