Today, March 1, 2021, Metropolitan Emmanuel of Polyana and Kilkis reposed in the Lord this morning after a fatal heart attack.
The Metropolitan of Kilkis was admitted to Papageorgiou Hospital on January 28, from which he was discharged last Wednesday, February 24, facing chronic health problems.
In an announcement, the Church of Greece expressed sorrow over the passing of Metropolitan of Polyana and Kilkis, Emmanuel.
The funeral service for the late Metropolitan of Polyana and Kilkis will take place on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at 11.00 in the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Kilkis.
The late Metropolitan will be buried at the Holy Monastery of Saint Georgios in Lofos, Kilkis, next to his predecessor, Metropolitan Apostolos.
Metropolitan Dimitrios of Goumenissa, Axioupolis and Polykastro has been appointed locum tenens of the Metropolis of Polyana and Kilkis, and will represent the Archbishop of Athens and all of Greece, Ieronymos, at the funeral service.
The late Metropolitan of Polyana and Kilkis, Emmanuel (Sigalas), was born in Ermoupolis, Syros, in 1953.
He was admitted to the Theological School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and graduated in 1976. He then attended the Postgraduate Department of the same School.
In 1977 he was appointed professor of secondary education and in 1980 he was ordained a deacon and a presbyter in Thera by the late Metropolitan of Thera, Amorgos and Islands, Gabriel.
He was ordained an archimandrite and was appointed preacher of the Holy Metropolis of Thera in March 1980, while he was appointed as teacher at the High School of Amorgos.
He remained in the above Metropolis until August 1983 and from September 1, 1983, he was appointed as a preacher to the Holy Metropolis of Thebes and Levadia and was placed as a teacher in the High School of the historic city of Thespies.
He was an associate of the current Archbishop of Athens and all Greece, as a preacher and catechist for 25 years and for a year he was a close associate of the Metropolitan of Thebes and Levadia, Georgios.
On October 12, 2009, he was elected Metropolitan of Polyana and Kilkis by the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece. He was ordained Metropolitan in the Church of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite in Athens on October 17, 2009. On November 11, 2009, he was enthroned at the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Kilkis.
