On the morning of Tuesday, May 11, a talk on violence against the elderly was held at St. Raphael Parish in Bentleigh, Melbourne, organized by the Hellenic Welfare Center of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia.
Many members of the Elderly Association were present, who were informed about a very serious issue that concerns the elderly today. Unfortunately, many seniors fall victim to abuse. This is a growing problem due to their inability to defend themselves. At the same time, however, there is difficulty in recognizing the phenomenon.
In the past, sensitivity on the subject was focused only on long-term care units for the elderly. However, it is now known that the abuse of the elderly can occur even in their own home, and sometimes by their own relatives. This can result from the negligence of the person who has taken care of the elderly or from those who want to exploit them financially.
It is noted, finally, that the boards of the parish associations of St. Basil Brunswick and Holy Trinity Richmond, on Monday, May 10 and Thursday, May 13, organized Easter meals for their members, with the presence and help of the parish priests.
