March 25 is a day of commemoration and honour of the Revolution of 1821 against the Ottoman Empire. The revolution of the Greeks is an important historical event, not only for the Greek but also for the European and the world History.
The above was mentioned, among other things, by the Minister of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, Kostas Gavroglu, in his message for the commemoration of the 25th of March.
According to Gavroglu, “for us the Greeks, it marks the beginning of our political formation as an independent nation state. But at the same time, it is also part of the great revolutionary movement that was inaugurated in Europe after the French Revolution.”
At another point in his message, he states that it is important to realize that the Greek national movement emerged through a complex intellectual and social process in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and was the first among the national revolutions in Europe that was succesful and led to the formation of the first independent state in the Balkans.
He also points out that in the decade that followed the beginning of the revolution, “the people set up new political institutions, proclaimed their will in the texts of the Greek Struggle – which incorporated the most progressive democratic ideas and values of the time – demanded its presence in the European diplomatic field, drew the admiration of the European peoples and inspired the development of a European solidarity movement.”
The Minister of Education concludes in his message that there was also a strong controversy and sharp internal conflicts that eventually led to bloody civil conflicts, which left their mark on the subsequent developments.
“Today, as we are heading towards the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the declaration of the Revolution, we must, on the occasion of this historic anniversary, reflect on what was done then, both on positive and negative actions, while having always in our minds how important the eternal message ‘Freedom or Death’ was. Freedom and democracy are conquered daily through multifaceted struggles. This is also one of the lasting lessons of the Revolution.”
