“The great and famous Mamas, the beauty of the martyrs of Christ, the warm protector of the wounded, the physician of terrible pains and divine healer, the one who cleanses the stench of demonic wounds and heals for free those who come to him in faith, the one who does not calculate the terrible threats of the ungodly tyrants, the one who did not sacrifice the best sheep as Abel did, but offered himself to God with martyrdom and various tortures”, the capital of half-occupied Cyprus celebrated brilliantly and solemnly.
Archbishop Chrysostomos of Cyprus presided over the Vespers of this great martyr of Church in the namesake church in the refugee settlement of Lakatameia in Nicosia, full of people, refugees, and non-refugees, who rushed to pray for him, to shake off the barbaric invader from the tearful and bloodied land of their ancestors. Among the numerous believers were refugees from the occupied community of Gerolakkos, who on a day like this, would brilliantly celebrate in their village their patron saint.
The solemn Vespers was also attended by Bishop Gregory of Mesaoria and clergy of the Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus. The Archbishop of Cyprus addressed a paternal speech to the flock of the church and presented the life and offering of this saint to all of us.
In particular, the Archbishop of Cyprus emphasized the imitation of the life of his parents by Saint Mamas and the realization that our saint could not but follow in the footsteps of the martyrdom of his parents.
“No matter how hard the young Mamas tried to spread the word of God, his martyrdom was inevitable. And if we really want to become true people of God, we must, like our great martyrs, open our hearts to God to fill them, so that we have the strength and stability like all those witnesses. And only with this fullness of God within us will we be able to succeed in this life and in eternity. ”
