Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens sent a letter to Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis in which he requests the immediate opening of churches.

According to the letter, which was written after the decision taken by the Metropolitans of the Holy Synod, the Hierarchs request the opening of churches for the faithful in compliance with the social distancing measures.

Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens requests the opening of churches for the faithful as soon as possible in full compliance with the measures and guidelines given by the competent health authorities concerning the congregation.

In other words, the guidelines regarding the number of the faithful in relation to the size of the church and social distancing measures will be respected. The letter is written in order to facilitate the procedures of ‘getting back to normal’ in Greek society.

The government is currently examining the request and is waiting for estimates to be given by Sotiris Tsiodras and the competent health authorities.
