US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo became the first US senior official to visit the Western Wall together with the Israeli prime minister.
It is noted that the visit of the US Secretary of State to the holiest place where Jews can pray in the Old City of Jerusalem coincided with US president’s statement, saying that it is now time to recognize the Israeli sovereignty at the Golan Heights.
In front of the television cameras, Mike Pompeo, PM of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, and US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman approached the Western Wall together, and bowing their heads. The top US diplomat then placed a piece of paper with a prayer written on it into the wall, a longstanding tradition.
“I think it’s symbolic that a senior American official go there with a prime minister of Israel,” Pompeo said, referring to “a place that’s important to many faiths.”
