The Russian Foreign Ministry sent a new message to Turkey in relation to the aspirations of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The Russian Foreign Ministry posted on Tuesday on its official Twitter account a video on the 193rd anniversary of the “Battle of Navarino” which resulted in the sinking of the Ottoman Fleet and the Independence of Greece.
This post comes after the announcement of the Russian embassy in Greece about the right of Greece to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles, the visit of Lavrov to Athens on the 26th of October, the arrival of the large anti-submarine ship “Vice-Admiral Kulakov” and Vladimir Putin’s visit to Greece in 2021.
In its post, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated: “193 years ago, the combined squadron of Russia, Great Britain and France defeated the Turkish-Egyptian fleet in the Bay of Navarino. The triumph of the allied fleet became one of the prerequisites for Greece’s independence.”

Moscow’s previous message to Ankara was posted six days ago when the Russian embassy in Greece reiterated its firm support for the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982), highlighting the sovereign right of states to have their territorial waters up to 12 nautical miles.

“This also applies to the Mediterranean Sea,” was added in the statement, while Turkey’s provocations continue as the Orus Reis is in the Eastern Mediterranean.
