In the presence of Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa, the official launch of the 2019 Maritime Week was held for the fifth consecutive year by the “Magniton Ark” Culture Foundation of the Metropolis of Demetrias, in collaboration with 43 local bodies. The opening ceremony took place at the Church of Saints Konstantinos and Eleni in Volos.
Metropolitan Theophilaktos of Tripoli, Metropolitan George of Guinea, Metropolitan Joachim of Helenoupolis, Metropolitan Theoklitos of Stagi and Meteora, Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias attended the opening ceremony.
In his address, Metropolitan Ignatios thanked the Patriarch for his contribution to culture and history. He thanked him for his coming in Volos to “say loud and clear that the sea must not be a cenotaph. The sea must bring together cultures, religions and people to coexist, create, be happy, and have peace. That is the intention of the Maritime Week.”
On his part, the Patriarch of Alexandria pointed out that “the dedication of this year’s Maritime Week to Alexandria is reminiscent of very important events for the Greek community throughout centuries. Alexandria, in the course of centuries, continue undeterred, where the greatest Greek of all time and man all over the world, King Alexander the Great, laid the foundation stone! The city he founded is the seat of the second highest, great, and apostolic Patriarchate of Orthodoxy.”
Patriarch Theodore referred to the mingling of the ancient Greek philosophy with the Divine Word and the Biblical Tradition in Alexandria, which was written down by the great Fathers and the ascetics.
