At its meeting on May 30, 2019, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church appointed Archbishop Antony (Sevriouk), until then Archbishop of Austria and Hungary, as primate of the Patriarchal Exarchate in Western Europe under the title of Archbishop of Chersonesus.
He will remain responsible for the institutions of the Patriarchate of Moscow abroad, whose seat will be in Paris. Metropolitan John (Roshchin), former Metropolitan of Chersonesus and primate of the Patriarchal Exarchate in Western Europe, was appointed as Metropolitan of Austria and Hungary.
This is an unexpected change as Metropolitan John was appointed as primate of the Patriarchal Exarchate in Western Europe in December 2018.
