“Tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean must be resolved in accordance with international law and in solidarity with the Allies,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, following a meeting of the North Atlantic Alliance’s defence ministers.
“We discussed the matter today with the ministers and we have provided considerable support in the de-escalation mechanism, in promoting dialogue, in reducing tensions and in exploring ways to strengthen this mechanism,” he added.
He called not to take a stance that would be in favour of escalating tensions but to support a de-escalation mechanism in order to avoid any incidents or accidents. “We politicians must do our best to resolve the difference,” he said. The de-escalation mechanism will not be the only solution but will pave the way for further talks. I believe that this will allow exploratory contacts to begin as soon as possible under the auspices of Germany,” he said.
