Metropolitan Andreas of Konitsa explained why he did not participate in the events for the liberation of Konitsa, in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
As he stressed during his speech at St. Kosmas Church on Sunday of Orthodoxy, “I am deeply concerned about our national affairs, following the steps of my great and holy predecessor Metropolitan Sebastianos.”
He noted that his dissatisfaction comes from the fact that last January, the President of the Hellenic Republic denied the committee that organized the referendum on the Macedonian issue in Athens, to give him a resolution.
“This means that he despised this people, who had gathered from all over the country, and after a while he ratified with his signature the shameful Prespa agreement, and from that moment the President’s ‘deafening silence’ followed.”
“After that,” he noted, “my conscience as an Archpriest required me not to attend the events for the liberation of Konitsa (24.2.2019) as long as the President of the Hellenic Republic would be present.”
“In fact”, he said expressing his concern, “after the so-called ‘Macedonian’ issue, the State will also deal with the so-called ‘Albanian’ issue.
And if the solution to that is similar to the ‘Macedonian’ issue, is better to leave it the way it is. Because the messages coming from ‘the interior’ of the neighboring country are very worrying. Therefore, I did not participate in any of the events,” he noted.
He also underlined that “the Orthodox Church, during its long history, in spite of some fluctuations, coincided with the Greeks.”
The Metropolitan concluded by pointing out that no compromise is permitted in national affairs.
