Metropolitan Chariton of Kananga expressed deep concern over the recent passage of a bill by the Greek Parliament legalizing civil marriage for same-sex couples.
Alongside addressing the challenges faced in the Congolese Mission and sharing recent decisions from the Patriarchate of Alexandria, he also provided updates on the ongoing construction of the Holy Monastery of Saint Varvaras Kananga.
Reflecting on the bill, Metropolitan Chariton lamented, “As Orthodox, we feel ashamed. When people look at Greece, they see Orthodoxy. They do not separate the two. This decision challenges our faith and our identity.”
He emphasized the importance of such challenges in strengthening believers’ resolve, stating, “These trials are a test of our faith. They serve to demonstrate our commitment to Orthodox principles in the face of societal changes.”
Expressing concern over the covert nature of some votes, he remarked, “Those who secretly supported this bill are deceiving themselves. They fail to comprehend the teachings of God.” Metropolitan Chariton affirmed the enduring presence of Orthodoxy despite societal shifts, asserting, “The devil cannot triumph over God.”
In conclusion, he urged steadfastness in the face of adversity, emphasizing the need for unwavering faith and adherence to Orthodox principles amidst societal challenges.
