On Sunday, 23 July 2023, on the occasion of this year’s sorrowful anniversary, at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady in Sydney, after the Divine Liturgy, a Memorial Service took place for the repose of the souls of all those who fell for the holy and heroic island of Cyprus during the Turkish invasion.
The Divine Liturgy and the Memorial Service were presided over by Archbishop Makarios of Australia, who, referring to the events of those days, reaffirmed everyone’s commitment to prevent these events from falling into oblivion. “We do not forget, we do not give up, but we continue to claim the only fair solution, that is, the reunification of the great-island of Cyprus”, he underlined. The Archbishop pointed out that the Holy Archdiocese of Australia resolutely serves this sacred duty, promoting, at every opportunity and at every suitable step, the rights of the Cypriot people.
The Archbishop added that the local Church is marching in this direction with the entire Greek Omogenia of Australia, including the tens of thousands originating from Cyprus, as well as with the Church of Cyprus, with Archbishop Georgios and with the political leadership of the country.
It is noted that present during the Divine Liturgy and the Memorial Service were the deputy Government Representative of the Republic of Cyprus, Ms. Doxa Komodromou, the High Commissioner of Cyprus in Australia Mr. Antonios Sammoutis, representatives of the Cypriot Associations and a large number of faithful.
