A memorial service for the completion of 189 years since the assassination of Ioannis Kapodistrias was held today at the monastery of Platytera in Corfu, where the first Governor of Greece rests in peace.
“We honor the memory of Ioannis Kapodistrias because we want to remind that death does not defeat the man, who in his life learned to fight for the whole and not for himself” said Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu.
The Metropolitan of Corfu emphasized that “we honor Ioannis Kapodistrias because he died poorer than when he came to power, as he relinquished any remuneration and spent his property for the, at the time, ruined Greece, showing us that love becomes a sacrifice in the age of individualism, indifference to values and fear of death. Figures like Ioannis Kapodistrias show us the way to make new beginnings”.
