Without believers, but in the presence of Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria, the Monastery of Saint George in old Cairo, the only Rotunda in the Middle East, will celebrate this year on April 23 and 24.
It is said that God walked in the area of the Monastery, as according to tradition the site was visited by the Holy Family when Joseph, the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus arrived in Egypt to be saved by Herod. It is also said that they drank water from the well of the Monastery, surviving until today. According to other traditions, Saint George was imprisoned there.
The current form of the monastery is a trademark of many Egyptian media reports, as it is one of the most beautiful in the country and stands out with its imposing location in the place where the current capital of the country of the Nile once began to be built in 970 AD.
In earlier years, almost all Egyptians vowed to walk from the center of Cairo to old Cairo and climb the many steps of the temple to worship St. George, who dominates the entrance in a marble mural, which potrays him defeating the dragon; an image approachable even to Muslims who also came to receive the grace of the Saint.
This year, the faithful will not be able to attend the feast of St. George, which is traditionally celebrated on Thursday and Friday after Easter, due to the restrictive measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Only Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria with the Patriarchal Commissioner Metropolitan Nicodemus of Memphis, and the clergy of the Egyptian capital will be present at the feast.
