Metropolitan Ioannis of Zambia and locum tenens of the Holy Diocese of Mozambique presided over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the historic Church of the Holy Trinity in Beira.
Concluding the Divine Liturgy, visibly moved, he officially designated Fr. Ioannis Thomas as the new priest of the parish. Reflecting on the rich history of the Church and the Greek Orthodox Community, he highlighted their profound contributions to the local community, serving as a poignant and historical testament.
In his speech, the Metropolitan stressed, addressing the new priest, the following:
“With the help of God and the wishes of our Patriarch, today you begin a new spiritual milestone in the history of this place. You will serve your country. The field may appear bare and uncultivated, yet the tranquil rainfall assures me. I am confident that you will cultivate it in the best way you know, as it is your place, and I trust you will give your utmost effort.”
The Metropolitan also thanked those present at this historic moment and especially the members of the Greek Military Training Mission, serving in Mozambique’s Chimoio region and participating in the mission of the European Union.
The newly appointed priest, Fr. Ioannis Thomas, is a graduate in Philosophy and a teacher, originally hailing from Beira. He is a young, active, and qualified clergyman, now tasked with spearheading a fresh beginning for the historic church of the once vibrant Greek Orthodox Community, which was once teeming with life. Fr. Stylianos will always be by his side, offering guidance for the missionary work that lies ahead.
