Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias briefed UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Greece’s stance on the Turkey-Libya MoUs on maritime zones during their meeting in Geneva on Monday.
The MoUs have been condemned by the EU, the Libyan parliament itself and several countries. The Greek minister reiterated that as far as Greece is concerned they are legally invalid, and he called them “non-existent”.
Dendias pointed out that Guterres “said he would refer the matter to the UN’s legal services so that he has their opinion on the matter.”
The foreign minister added, “I had the opportunity to discuss the Cyprus issue, the secretary-general’s efforts towards a solution, and to show him the willingness of the Greek side to assist him in any way we can,” he noted.
