Greece has been elected as a Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-26 term, receiving an overwhelming 182 votes out of the 188 countries that participated in the electoral process.
“Today is a historic day for Greece and a significant milestone for our country’s presence on the global stage. The UN General Assembly’s vote in favor of Greece is a testament to our nation’s importance in the international community,” stated the Foreign Minister following the vote.
Joining Greece in securing seats on the Security Council are Denmark, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia. These five countries will begin their two-year terms on January 1, replacing the current members whose terms conclude on December 31 – Mozambique, Japan, Ecuador, Malta, and Switzerland.
All five newly elected countries have prior experience on the Security Council: Pakistan with seven previous terms, Panama with five, Denmark with four, Greece with two, and Somalia with one.
In a post on social media platform “X,” the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its commitment to collaborating with UN member states to enhance global peace and security.
This election shows Greece’s active role and growing influence in international diplomacy, highlighting its dedication to contributing to global stability and governance.
