Diplomatic sources have strongly criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent remarks regarding the illegal invasion of Cyprus in 1974, labeling them as a distortion of historical truth and an insult to the memory of the victims.
Erdogan’s comments were made during an address to the staff of the 4th Army Corps in Ankara, where he emphasized the importance of military strength. In particular, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that “if they had advanced further south, Cyprus would have fallen entirely under their control.”
The timing of Erdogan’s remarks is particularly concerning, as they come at a time when efforts are underway, under the auspices of the United Nations, to relaunch talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, the sources emphasized.
