Today, April 1, 2021, Bishop Elpidios of Kyanea attended the festive event of St. Andrew’s Grammar school in Perth for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution.
The event took place at the school gym and was attended by students and teachers of the school, the Consul of Greece in Perth, Georgia Karasiotou, the President of the Hellenic Community of Western Australia, Vyron Spartalis, and local political authorities.
In his speech, the Bishop of Kyanea told the students: “Today, we celebrate two great events, the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, where for the first time the joyful message of human salvation was heard almost 2000 years ago and the Greek Revolution 200 years ago. Despite the chronological distance between these events, they nevertheless have one thing in common, freedom. Today, this celebration reminds us that everyone has the right to freedom.”
Later on, the students performed a musical-theatrical performance about the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the Greek Revolution, while the dance department of the school presented the “Dance of Zalongo”, where the Souliotisses preferred the heroic death to the disgrace of the Ottomans.
