Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias expressed his firm opposition to changing Constitution’s Article 3, estimating that “this particular attempt of theirs shall marginalize all Christians, bringing on obvious results by court judgments”.
In an all-day conference entitled “Spreading the Bible to Corfu and Greece 200 years after the establishment of the Hellenic Bible Society”, Metropolitan Ignatios, president of the Hellenic Bible Society, referred to Article 3 of the Constitution.
“No one agrees to this change. The Constitution includes and provides for freedom of religion. This is proved by the fact that recently all Christian and other Confessions in Greece were recognized, turning from a status of privacy to a status recognizing their religiosity. Nothing prohibits anyone to feel free in this country, to practice his/her religion, to choose his/her own faith while having at the same time a constitutional paragraph saying that there is a majority Confession, the Christian one”, concluded the Metropolitan of Demetrias and Almyros.
During his speech in the all-day conference, he noted, inter alia, that “the last 20 years, the trust among the Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholics and the Protestants has been forged; Greece models as an example for other Orthodox Churches to imitate, with the sole purpose of re-evangelizing people, so that Greeks shall study the Word of the Lord”.
