On Sunday, March 17, the 40-day memorial service of the late Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne, Father Nicholas Bozikis, was held at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Sydney. Archbishop Makarios of Australia presided over the Divine Liturgy, accompanied by the Protosyncellus of the Holy Archdiocese, Archimandrite Christoforos Krikelis of the Ecumenical Throne, and other clergy members of Sydney.
The Archbishop, reflecting on the life and contributions of the departed clergyman, emphasized his dedicated and sacrificial service within the Holy Archdiocese of Australia for over half a century. “He served the Church,” he noted, “not merely as a cleric, but with the understanding that priesthood is a way of life.” That is true giving, self-emptying, and love, enabling you to demonstrate to people the true essence of Christ and the Church.” He also reminisced about the late clergyman’s initiation into the priesthood during a challenging period for the local Church and the Greek diaspora in the fifth continent.
The Archbishop’s emotions reached their peak as he spoke about the deep reverence shown by the late Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne, particularly during the Vespers of Forgiveness and the Second Resurrection on Easter Sunday. “We deeply miss Father Nicholas, especially tonight as we gather for the Vespers of Forgiveness,” he said, visibly moved, and continued, “He was always the first to attend all the events of our Church. He had a special reverence in this Service that takes place tonight, as well as in the Vespers of Love. As the days drew near, he would frequently summon the priests and say, ‘Join me tonight for forgiveness.’ He voluntarily communicated with the younger clergy members and urged them to keep the traditions of the Church. It’s fitting that we’re commemorating his memorial service today, and as I recall these memories, I’m moved. Yet, I’m also inspired by his courage and unwavering dedication to always be present.” I think that our Archdiocese will find it difficult to find clergy like Father Nicholas.”
In conclusion, Archbishop Makarios expressed the gratitude of the Orthodox Church, and particularly of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, for the many years of service and contributions of the late Father Nicholas Bozikis. He wished for God to grant him rest among the Saints and the Righteous.
