“Digital Day 2019”, organized by the Commission, was held on April 9, in Brussels, under the auspices of the Romanian EU Council Presidency.
The event was attended by European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel, as well as the Counselor of the Office of the Delegation of the Church of Greece in the EU, Protopresbyter Dr. George Lekkas.
The topics of the meeting were, among other things, the presentation of the final text of the European Commission on the Code of Ethics for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence.
The presentation of the final text on the Code of Ethics for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence is a vindication of the efforts of the Office of the Greek Church Representation in the EU.
In particular, the intervention of the Office of the Delegation in the public debate of the European Commission on this subject, with a text by Father George Lekkas, was adopted as a text by the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mairead McGuinness, and sent electronically on her own initiative to all Members of the European Parliament and to the European Commission.
This text underlined the need to take into account and protect the social dimension of the human being in all applications of artificial intelligence.
In the final text of this European Code, an additional principle that the systems of artificial intelligence and robotics must serve, has been accepted and introduced; the principle of protection of the “social and environmental well-being”.
The embodiment of the “social principle”, proposed by the Office of the Representation of the Church of Greece in the final text of this Code, demonstrates the importance of exercising systematic pressure on the EU Institutions in making critical decisions about the lives of all of us, and it also highlights the need for close cooperation of all who share common values for a better tomorrow.
