The US Congress overrode by a very large majority Donald Trump’s veto on the annual defense spending bill, which envisages, among other things, the imposition of sanctions on Turkey for the purchase of the Russian S-400 system.
The Senate approved the $ 740 defense spending bill by 81 votes to 13, despite “president’s objections,” in a special session on New Year’s Day, two days before the new Congress was sworn in on Sunday. As the House of Representatives did the same on Monday, the text is finally adopted.
A majority of Republican senators united their vote with that of Democrats, defying the Republican leader 20 days before the end of his term and while he always said he was proud of their support.
Republican Senator Mitch McConnell did not back down, urging senators to vote in favor of the 2021 annual defense spending bill.
The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) determines everything from how many ships will be purchased to the management of geopolitical threats. It envisages, among other things, a 3% increase in the salaries of the staff in the field of defense.
“We have been approving this bill for 59 years. Either way, we will complete the 60th NDAA and vote for it before this Congress completes its term on Sunday.”
