Unwavering support of Church of Greece for Ecumenical Patriarchate – Greece steps up diplomatic pressure for Hagia Sophia

Exclusive: Ecumenical Patriarch to Archbishop of Greece: It is an opportunity to thaw our mutual relations

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop Ieronymos of Greece

Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece contacted Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on Sunday.

The Archbishop expressed the full solidarity and unwavering support of the Church of Greece for the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

In addition, Archbishop Ieronymos had an in-depth discussion with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Sunday afternoon.

The topic of discussion was the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque and the further actions that the Greek government and the Church of Greece will take.

Yesterday, Archbishop Ieronymos referred to the issue of the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque, stating that “the instrumentalization of religion for the pursuit of party political, geopolitical and geostrategic expediencies characterizes the one who attempts it.

It is an insult and affront not only to the Orthodoxy and Christianity, in general, but also to all civilized humakind, to every thinking person regardless of religion. It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.”

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias is in Brussels today to attend the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

The main topic of discussion will be the comprehensive approach to EU-Turkey relations, with an emphasis on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean.

As he said in an interview on SKAI TV, Nikos Dendias will address the issue of Hagia Sophia, stressing that Greece is urging the EU to have a list of strong measures against Turkey if the latter violates sovereignty or sovereignty rights of Greece and how it will support Cyprus in imposing sanctions related to Cypriot rights.
