Tributes have poured in for Patriarch Neophyte of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church following his passing on March 13, announced by the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
The National Assembly in Bulgaria held a moment of silence in his honor, recognizing him as a spiritual leader who promoted unity, peace, and well-being.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov remembered him as a wise and compassionate figure that inspired faith and strength in others: “Patriarch Neofit will remain in our memories as a wise and kind spiritual leader who gave faith and strength to the laity, even when he himself was physically weak.”
Deputy Prime Minister Maria Gabriel praised his commitment to unity and piety.
President Rumen Radev described him as a supporter of the Bulgarian nation and Orthodoxy. He posted on Facebook: “The death of the Primate of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church is a huge loss for it and for the Bulgarian people. With his dedicated spiritual service to God and Orthodoxy, Patriarch Neofit established himself as a supporter of the Bulgarian nation and our country.”
Sofia city council also observed a moment of silence.
Bulgarians across the country visited Orthodox churches to light candles and offer prayers. It is recalled that the late Patriarch’s body lies in state in Sofia allowing the faithful to pay their respects.
Furthermore, esteemed figures expressed their sorrow and condolences: Chief Mufti Dr. Mustafa Hadzhi extended condolences, highlighting Patriarch Neophyte’s role as a dialogic spiritual leader and his respect for religious diversity. Jewish organizations also expressed gratitude for his commitment to dignity and traditional values.
