Last Thursday, the decision of the City of Athens to build a crematorium was signed by Minister of Environment George Stathakis, in the presence of mayor George Kaminis.
The decision determines the place and conditions for the construction of the Cremation Centre, as designed and proposed by the municipality of Athens for the area of Eleonas.
“This is a very important development that paves the way for the creation of a cremation centre, which was not just a commitment but also an obligation of the state towards the fundamental rights of the citizens,” said the Mayor of Athens, George Kaminis, who also pointed out, “In 2014, when we launched this attempt, we went through the mill, in order to correct the weaknesses of the legislative framework and eventually pave the way for the creation of a Cremation Centre for the in our country”.
According to Kathimerini, the ministerial decision provides for the construction of the crematorium, as well as for the creation of communal green areas (blocks 17 and 29), based on the decision of the Urban Planning Council of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, which unanimously approved the proposal of the City of Athens.
