This year marks 130 years since the construction of St. George Cathedral in Stockholm and 50 years since the founding of the Metropolis of Sweden and all Scandinavia.
As Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden said in a related message, his promise in 2014, when he took office, was to launch the renovation of the neo-Gothic cathedral, which has simple lines in its interior.
Metropolitan Cleopas points out in his message that works on the maintenance, renovation and restoration of the church have begun, for the first time since 1889 when the church was erected.
During the last five years, a number of interventions have been carried out in the church, including, most recently, the creation of a Museum of Greek Christian Heritage, offices of the clergymen, a library and a playground, works to be inaugurated by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, on Sunday, September 29, 2019.
In his message, Metropolitan Cleopas concludes that “I am sure that the love of you all, members and friends of our Missionary Church, will make the utmost contribution to the realization of this historic initiative, which is part of our common vision.”
