The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, sent a condolence telegram to his counterpart, Nikos Dendias, noting that the memory of the great composer will remain forever in the hearts of Russian citizens.
“I learned with deep sorrow about the loss of the world-famous Greek composer, prominent social and political figure Mikis Theodorakis, who contributed invaluably to the world cultural heritage and glorified Greek music around the world,” said the Russian foreign minister.
He added: “Russia knows Mikis Theodorakis as a great friend of our country, defender of the ideals of freedom and peace, to which he remained faithful until the end of his life.”
According to the Russian minister, “his selfless struggle in the Greek Resistance against the forces of fascism and Nazism will be an example for the current and future generations.”
“We greatly appreciate the contribution of Mikis Theodorakis in the strengthening of the Greek-Russian cultural relations, the friendship between our peoples,” said Lavrov in his telegram, which was delivered late yesterday to the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Russian foreign minister concluded: “The memory of this great man, who went through hardships, will remain forever in our hearts.”
