In spite of its contradictory statements at the beginning of the negotiations on the Prespa agreement and the subsequent ratification of the agreement by the parliaments of the two countries, Russia recognized today the Republic of Northern Macedonia.
According to the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, “Russia has officially recognized the Republic of Northern Macedonia, despite Moscow’s earlier reservations about the legitimacy of changing the name of the country.
“On February 19, 2019, the Russian Embassy in Skopje received a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the ‘Republic of Macedonia’ with the announcement of the change of the official name of that country to Republic of Northern Macedonia,” the Russian ministry said in a statement.
“The Russian Federation recognizes this country under the new name Democracy of Northern Macedonia,” he said.
