Τhose who visited today the historic and imposing Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in the coastal city of Port Said, were overwhelmed with memories from the past.
There, where they were greeted by the Metropolitan Niphon of Pilousion, together with the Holy Clergy, performing the festal and archieratic Divine Liturgy for the Transfiguration of the Lord, to whom the Church is dedicated and is celebrated today as a feast day for Egypt. The temple has been inextricably linked to the history of the Egyptians from Port Said.
The Greek authorities were represented by Greek Navy Corps Commander Angelos Kiosis, who is also Greece’s Military Attache in Port Said.
Furthermore, apart from the Arab-speaking Orthodox and the few remaining Greeks of Port Said, there attended many Egyptians who arrived from Heliopolis in Cairo today, on a pilgrimage visit, organized by the President of the Hellenic Shelter of Heliopolis, Mr. Zacharias Foumelis.
Therefefore, the Greeks of Cairo, Heliopolis and Port Said had the opportunity not only to light a candle in the beloved Egyptian church but also to remember the old times when the temple was bursting with life, as the Hellenic Community was flourishing in the area.
