Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias tried to strike the right balance and keep his flock away from any divisions or fanaticism.
In particular, he spoke of receiving Holy Communion on the day of commemoration of the restoration of the icons and praised the faithful for coming to church despite the new situation that has arisen over the last days.
Moreover, he said, “We have to carry on thinking rationally, preventing, and taking care of ourselves. I urge everyone not to misunderstand our brothers and sisters, who want to take more protection measures. Personally, I will not misunderstand anyone who does not kiss my hand at this time. I will accept one who keeps a distance from the icons in order to protect himself or herself. Bowing is enough. If someone wants to venerate the icons, he or she is free to do it. May God bless him or her! It is a sin to criticise them.”
“There is one thing we will never stop doing, that is celebrating the Divine Liturgy and the Holy Communion. History has shown that no clergyman has ever be taken ill after drinking from the chalice nor did any believer after receiving Holy Communion. This is a place of faith and miracles. Whoever does not believe, it is his problem, not mine. We will obey any command except this. No one will be deprived of the Divine Liturgy. God tests us to show us our weaknesses. Humans must worship God for being able to receive Holy Communion without falling sick. This is a miracle of life,” he added.
