The Church commemorates Saint Matrona, Venerable Cyricus, Martyrs Philetas the Senator, his wife Lydia.
Saint Matrona from Thessaloniki lived during the 2nd century and was a maid in the house of a Jewish official of the Roman Empire.
His Jewish wife, named Plantilla, trusted Saint Matrona thanks to her diligence and devotion and used her as a companion every time she went to the synagogue to pray and study the Torah Law.
Saint Matrona took advantage of this opportunity and went to the church adjacent to the synagogue, where she honored Jesus Christ with fervent prayer.
When Plantilla found out the Saint Matrona had gone to the church, she became enraged and brought her to her husband, who demanded that Saint Matrona renounce her faith in Jesus Christ.
Her non-compliance to her master’s order and her constant confession that she was a Christian were the reasons for the tortures and imprisonment. She finally reposed in the Lord in this prison, thus receiving the wreath of martyrdom as a prize.
