Plato’s Academy hosted the ceremony during which the new Athens mayor, Kostas Bakoyiannis, took the oath of office.
This is the first taking of the oath of a mayor of Athens outside the city hall, and crowds of people gathered to attend the ceremony.
Mr. Bakoyannis made this decision, as he wanted to show, literally and symbolically, that from the first moment of his duties he would fight the daily life of the city, not only in the center, but also in the 129 neighborhoods of the seven Municipalities of Athens.
In his speech, Kostas Bakoyannis spoke of “respect for Athens and our culture” but also “awe at the challenge and bet that Athens becomes worthy of the Athenians”.
