On the second day, the Holy Synod of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece decided to continue the dialogue with the State, insisting, however, on the current payment regime of clerics and church employees of the Church of Greece.
In a day dominated by the election of three new Metropolitans, and mainly the thriller election of the Metropolitan of Glyfada, the Hierarchy is standing by its decision of November 16 to maintain the current payment regime.
The Hierarchy also congratulated the Special Committee for Church-State dialogue for its presentation on the first day of the meeting.
The Hierarchy decided that the dialogue with the State will be continued on the following matters: the permanent posts of the clergy and church employees, compensation for the expropriated church property until 1939, the management of the church property.
The Hierarchy expressed its total opposition to the attempted constitutional revision and hoped that the next Parliament will not abolish or amend the Articles of the Constitution that refer to the cultural and social idiosyncrasy of our Nation and the protection of the family which is the cornerstone of society”.
The Hierarchy also adopted the text of positions of the Standing Holy Synod which was sent to the leaders of all parliamentary parties before the first vote of the Parliament on February 12 on the proposed amendments of Articles 3, Article 13(5), Article 21(1), Article 33(2), and Article 59(1-2) of the Constitution.
Archimandrite Athanasios of Gianousa was elected Metropolitan of Sisanion and Siatista with 71 votes out of a total of 77. Bishop Antonios of Salona elected Metropolitan of Glyfada, Ellinikon, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Vari with 38 votes out of a total of 77. Bishop Klimis of Methoni was elected Metropolitan of Peristeri with 63 votes.
The Holy Synod of the Hierarchy will complete its work tomorrow, Thursday, March 21.
