Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis was received on Thursday by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America at the seat of the Holy Archdiocese.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by his wife Mareva Mitsotaki and their son Constantine.
Addressing PM Mitsotakis, the Archbishop said that “on behalf of our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, I wish and pray that the new Greek government under your leadership will match the Greek people’s hopes and will achieve progress, prosperity, economic development and the resolution of the existing social and other problems.”
For his part, PM Mitsotakis thanked Elpidophoros for his warm words and expressed his excitement about being at the seat of the Archdiocese for the first time in his new capacity as Prime Minister of Greece.
“2019 is an important year for both of us. You are undertaking this crucial mission to lead the Archdiocese of America and to give new impetus to a Church that is so deeply rooted in the Greek Diaspora,” he noted.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis expressed his optimism for the future, stressing that he has high expectations of the future work of the Archbishop in America. “As a bearer of hope you also give us, through your work, the strength and the mental and spiritual resources to go our own difficult way, with confidence in our strengths, with a deep knowledge of our History, with respect to our Church and our traditions. I am absolutely sure that Hellenism in Greece, America and everywhere in the world will succeed.”
The Greek Prime Minister was also accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Diaspora Greeks, Antonis Diamataris, and the Greek Consul General in New York, Dr. Konstantinos Koutras.
