Deputy Foreign Minister Konstas Vlasis participated online in the awarding ceremony during which Michael Dukakis was conferred the Order of Honour of the Grand Commander on Saturday.
The ceremony was organized by the Consulate General of Greece in Boston. The award ceremony took place at the home of Michael Dukakis and the Ambassador of Greece to the United States, Alexandra Papadopoulou, presented Michael Dukakis with the award, on behalf of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
In his speech, Kostas Vlasis congratulated Michael Dukakis on his action in the US political life and in Greek community in the USA, as well as on his support in the promotion of the Greek national rights. He also stressed that his overall career in US public life, always keeping his eyes on Greece, was an example to be imitated and a source of inspiration for the younger generations of expatriates, according to a relevant announcement by the deputy minister’s office.
Michael Dukakis is a prominent figure in US political life. He is the longest-serving governor in Massachusetts history and was nominated by the Democratic Party for president in the 1988 election. As a member of the Greek-American community, he carried out important charitable, social and educational activities.
