European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schoinas highlighted the EU’s target for resilient societies, which can tackle radicalisation and aggression, during the Commission’s presentation of the new Counter-Terrorism Agenda for the EU. “We will not let terrorism undermine the European way of life,” he stressed.
“The foundations of our Union are based on integration and respect for human rights. This is the best way to protect against the threat of terrorism.”By building inclusive societies, where everyone can find their place, we reduce interest in extremist rhetoric,” Margaritis Schoinas pointed out. He added, “The European way of life is not optional and we must do everything we can to prevent those who seek to circumvent it. Through today’s agenda, we focus on investing in the resilience of our societies with measures to better address radicalisation and to protect public places from attacks by taking adequate measures.”
The recent series of attacks on European soil has reminded us that terrorism remained a real and existing threat.
The aim of the new agenda is to intensify the fight against terrorism and violent extremism and to strengthen the EU’s resilience to terrorist threats. Based on the work we have done in recent years, we seek to support the EU Member States in better anticipating, preventing, protecting and dealing with a terrorist threat. Europol, the EU’s law enforcement agency, will provide better operational support to investigations carried out by member states under the revised mandate proposed today.
